Seeing your Life through the Lens of the Gospel

  1. This marks a turning point in the life of Jesus, and of the disciples. It is the first time that his disciples recognise him as the Messiah.  Recall turning points in your own life when you came to some deeper understanding of who Jesus is.
  1. ‘Who do you say that I am?’ This is possibly the most important question that Jesus puts to us. In your heart of hearts, do you answer this question?
  1. Jesus praises Peter for his faith and comments that this was not his own doing but a gift of God. Perhaps there have been times when you have been more than usually conscious that faith is a gift.  Be thankful for the gift you have received.

The Altar

Remembering Martyrs – Celebrating Eucharist at the tombs of martyrs on their anniversaries and on feast days was an important part of Early Christian worship.  These stone tombs served as altars and influenced the practice of using stone altars in churches.

When public worship moved from the home to public places, the tradition of honoring martyrs continued.  Rather than move the remains of a saint, if possible, the altar of a church would be placed directly over their resting place.

This often required the sanctuary to be raised and was known as a confession as the martyrs had confessed and died for their faith, Examples can still be seen in some Rome churches such as San Lorenzo and St Peter’s.  Sometimes the top of the grave was level with the floor of the church.  Either way, it was important to leave the remains of a saint intact and unmoved.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament.  I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul.  Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.  I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You.  Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Seeing your Life through the Lens of the Gospel

  1. Have you ever found yourself saying ‘that was worth it’ after giving up something (time, pleasure, money, etc)? What was the treasure that made the sacrifice worthwhile?
  1. The ‘kingdom of heaven’ is when God is really the ruler in our life. What treasures have you obtained when you allow God to be at the centre of your life?
  1. In life we gather a lot of things, some good and some bad. The wise person in the kingdom of heaven, knows how to sit down and make decisions on what to keep and what to discard.  When have you undertaken that kind of discernment? What have you discarded? What have you retained?

Celebrating the Liturgy

Liturgy is an ‘action’ of the whole Christ.  It is the whole community, the Body of Christ united with its Head, that celebrates.  The celebrating assembly is the community of the baptised who, by regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, are consecrated to be a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, that… they may offer spiritual sacrifices.  This ‘common’ priesthood is that of Christ the sole priest, in which all his members participate.
