Celebrating the Liturgy
Liturgy is an ‘action’ of the whole Christ. It is the whole community, the Body of Christ united with its Head, that celebrates. The celebrating assembly is the community of the baptised who, by regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, are consecrated to be a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, that… they may offer spiritual sacrifices. This ‘common’ priesthood is that of Christ the sole priest, in which all his members participate.

Seeing your Life through the Lens of the Gospel
- The transfiguration experience was one which, for Jesus, clarified his relationship with his Father and strengthened him for the future. It was also a moment of deep revelation for the disciples. What have been the experiences, the moments of insight, which for you have clarified your sense of who you are, and what is your relationship with God?
- The disciples were prepared for the experience by getting an invitation from Jesus to come apart, to withdraw to the mountain. Have there been times when going apart has been an important element in preparing you for a deep experience?
- On the mountain the disciples saw Jesus in a new way. His appearance changed. Sometimes in friendship there are moments of sharing in which we get to know a friend in a new and deeper way. Have you had that experience in human friendship, or in your relations?
Bishop David’s Reflection on the Pilgrims of Hope Assembly
There was something quite exciting in the Pilgrims of Hope Assembly gathering at Thornton, Saturday 18th July 2023. All sorts of people were there. It all felt quite business-like with presentations and various workshops. At the same time, there was a sense of joy too. Those three words which accompany the forthcoming Synod of Bishops on being a synodal Church, always captivate my thinking about these things: there is plenty to do to make sure that communion, participation, and mission are realities in all our communities and across the various activities of our diocesan family. It strikes me that a few things are essential for this to happen. We need the right attitude. There’s not much hope when we become cynical and tired of it all! We need to appreciate how easy it is to imagine this is all our doing. It’s not. The Lord is the One who enables the Kingdom of God to be revealed. And we can easily become overcome by the many aspects and challenges of our ministry. This robs us of the vision we need and the sense that we must expect the good Lord to do something in our midst.
